Robert F. Goheen '40 *48, 16th president of Princeton, dies at age 88
Robert F. Goheen, president of Princeton University from 1957 to 1972 during a period of transformative growth and change, died of heart failure March 31 at the age of 88. During Goheen's tenure Princeton became coeducational, increased its ethnic and racial diversity and coped with protests against the war in Vietnam. The University expanded its commitment to research, its annual budget quadrupled, alumni contributions more than doubled and 25 new buildings were constructed on the main campus. A service of remembrance and celebration will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27, in the University Chapel. To read Goheen's obituary and view highlights from the video "Robert F. Editor: I have posted some comments by classmates on the Class Notes page.

SCROLL DOWN THE LOGGED-IN HOME PAGE To See the Roster of 2008 Reunion Attendees.
After you log in you can click on a link for reunion photos.  Individuals are invited to upload select photos (on reunions, not African safari animals) as well as view the photo album.

Class Notes Tab: This tab has a variety of dates.  We are posting notes on a FIFO basis--meaning that the oldest are at the bottom.  Just like the COOKIE MONSTER: Feed me!  Send in your articles/thoughts.

Newsletter Tab: Click on date tabs to read about different subjects.   We have an update on the new class project, Eagle Rock School, as well as on Blindsight, the movie.  In addition we have commentary on the NYC dinner and memorials for Ernest Johnson (H'62) and Steve Hansen.

PHOTOS: Ed Doughty just sent in a great batch of college photos (non incriminating).  If you roomed close to or partied with Ed, check out the PHOTO ALBUM PAGE (not the College page as stated in PAW)

UPCOMING EVENTS

CITADEL FOOTBALL: Obie is trying to form a group--tail-gating or whatever for the Princeton-Citadel football game on September 20, 2008.  Apparently, ex footballer Ed Weihenmayer will be there.  E-mail Obie or webmaster (I'll forward to the right contact).

HARVARD-PRINCETON GAME--HOME: October 25th at the new stadium ($7 tickets!): A group is beginning to form--early.  We guess that certain classmates have to look around for dates & accommodations for them. The class has tables under the 1962 banner at Jadwin Cage before the game.  Lunches can be purchased--or bring a picnic.

DC DINNER: Planned for 11/1/08--in time to make an incorrect forecast for the General Election.  Just in from Al Muller:
The Washington DC autumn gathering is still planned for Saturday, November 1st, so save your Halloween black and orange paraphernalia and join us. Festivities start with a rooftop reception at 6:30 PM at John Montgomery's law firm on the 9th Floor of 101 Constitution Avenue, NW, overlooking the US Capitol, within walking distance of the train station. Dinner starts at about 7:30 PM downstairs in Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse if we are able to navigate into the elevators; the usual $62 tab per person for dinner, including wine. Our guest speaker will be Mac and Marcia Odell '62, whose extensive experience in Nepal and the Peace Corps has led to an innovative approach for empowerment of individuals and communities. According to reports from Barry B., Mac and his wife Marcia are inspiring, motivational speakers.  Contact Al Muller for reservations (contact info in Directory).

NYC DINNER: Planned for 2/10/09 at Macellaria's in the meat-packing district.  Cocktails @ 6:30 PM.  Price per person is $120--all inclusive (but this is NYC, not DC).  Sam Reiken is the organizer.

BOSTON DINNER: Being planned for this Fall by Bill Barber and Brian Rosborough.

MINI REUNION IN CALIFORNIA: August 2009
Note from Al Barr: The Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach could be a wonderful venue for a mini reunion for the class of 1962. I have a “line” tickets for next season ( it runs daily from roughly July 5th to Labor Day) for the nightly performances), blocks of good tickets would have to be ordered and paid for by mid-September ‘08. I have requested that 16-20 tickets be held for 2 different Saturdays in August. We would have to pay for all tickets beforehand. However, there's no problem returning Saturday night tickets and having the Pageant resell them - - folks line up at the box office in lawn chairs beginning before 6a.m. for a shot at tickets for that night. I’ve noticed that a couple of our local (CA) Classmates attend every year. In addition, at "Membership Appreciation Day," a few weeks ago, there were a few orange & black tables filled with Princetonians of various ages. Contact Al at albarr@ix.netcom.com

RECENT EVENTS

REUNIONS '08 Dinner

The class had a dinner at the Professors' Lounge on Saturday, May 31, 2008.  A congenial group spent 3 1/2 hours including the reception, dinner, and fireworks display.  Off year reunions are unique: one gets to see an "adjoining class/classes" and visit with a smaller number of '62ers in a very relaxed atmosphere.  The class has no "schedule of events" in an off year so attendees wander around as they see fit.  The P-rade contingent is a tight-knit group--still sporting kazoos.

NYC Dinner on 2-12-08
The annual NYC event took place during a snow/sleet storm.  We went to the Macellaria Restaurant in NYC's meatpacking district--a quaint location with utterly no access to public transportation, cabs, etc.  However, one can park within a block of this cozy restaurant and gain easy access to the West Side Highway.  Coverage of the event was in a March PAW.  In addition, there is a report on the "Newsletter" page, which one can access after logging in.  New Yorkers did not spend much, if any, time on national politics given that our DC classmates so clearly predicted the events--as accurately as all the polls!

DC Dinner on 10-27-07 (as reported by Al Muller):

With Class President Dave "Obie" O'Brien and his wife Sue (who would run in the Marine marathon the following day) in attendance, along with VP Sandy Ackley, the "DC-and-outlaying regions" portion of the class gathered under the '62 banner at La Ferme restaurant, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, for its annual fall reunion. In addition to the class officers, who had traveled from Atlanta and Princeton, we welcomed John and Amanda Dunn, who arrived from the Pittsburg area, and "local regulars": Al Barr and daughter Liz, Jack and Sue Whitelaw, John and Barbara McGraw, Bob and Barbara Houck, John and Marilyn Montgomery, Bill and Jackie Weldon, Jeff Shane, Bill and Barbara Harris, Sen. Ed and JoAnn Holland, Howard and Victoria Pyle, and your faithful scribe, Al Muller. After the usual hour of cocktails and comparison of medical aches and pains (with four doctors in attendance it was inevitable), we enjoyed our steak, swordfish, chicken or vegetarian plates, washed down with some wine and good conversation. Our esteemed surgeon President was surprised by a Class Service Award, in recognition of his many accomplishments, presented by our esteemed infectious disease physician VP (at times it seemed like a medical convention). Jeff Shane, Under Secretary of Transportation, was congratulated on his and wife Jean's adoption of a now 2 year-old daughter, making him the most recent class dad. Jack Whitelaw, based on his many years of experience working for Exxon Mobil, gave an insightful talk about the energy crisis. This was followed by announcement of the results of our anonymous political poll, taken at the start of the dinner. There was agreement by 90% of both men and women that the Democratic Presidential nominee would be Clinton, and while 90% of the men thought the Republican nominee would be Guiliani, 27% of the women thought it would be Romney. When it came to the actual vote between these predicted choices, our gender gap was once again clearly evident: while 72% of the men would pick Guiliani and 28% Obama, 45% of the ladies would choose Clinton, 27% Guiliani, 18% Romney, and 9% Obama. We closed the evening with a rousing rendition of "Going Back", accompanied by kazoos donated by Al Barr, and "Old Nassau", led by former Tigertone Bob Houck. Having cleared the restaurant of other patrons, we departed into the night. (note the correction--Dr. Al had placed Bob in the 'soons but he was a 'tone)

WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 1962 WEB SITE
We are striving to keep this site current and working on new features so login and find out--we need double-checks and feedback.  We are trying to refresh the Class Notes and Newsletter sections on this site more often, using longer e-mails/travelogues, etc.  PAW notes are limited to 300 words while memorials have a 200 word limit.   We are learning the procedure to extend lengthier notes to the university web site.  In the meantime, we will try to use the class web site for such information, including pictures.  Contact webmaster@princeton62.org with input.  We have put in several new e-mails from '62ers on the Class Notes page as well as an article on Eagle Rock School where Robert Burkhardt is headmaster (link in left column) so  log on and read.   We welcome new input--we can handle length!

Class President, Dave O'Brien now has his own page  (see president's page link in left column) where you can read his recent letter dated 8/25/08.

DUES
Class Dues: Still $62 with an optional/additional $10 contribution to our scholarship fund.  The class has to pay for PAW subscriptions, mailings, and certain events.  Thanks to all who have paid.  However, efforts by class officers, have helped balance the books.  Thanks to our frugal treasurer for his vigilance.

ANNUAL GIVING
Chairman Joe Caltagirone and Special Gifts Chairman Phil Carlin did an amazing job with the '06/'07 campaign.  The class of '62 raised more money than any 45th reunion class since '58 and the participation was over 67%.  This is another year--we're in the mid 40s for participation as of early June '08.

CLASS NOTES FOR PAW--and This Site
Kindly submit notes to Barry Bosak. E-mail secretary@princeton62.org/  As noted above, we are reprinting lengthy e-mails on the "Class Notes" page of this web site--you must log in.  New notes are continuously posted--an update on Eagle Rock School, information on BlindSight the movie, and several classmates.  Memorials are put in as soon as we submit them to PAW--after we have approval from widows/survivor(s).   Memorials take longer to get into PAW since they go into a queue.  We are also using the Newsletter section for some  special interest notes--and will try to change these more often (submissions welcome).

WEB SITE REGISTRATION/E-MAILS
Classmates are urged to register for the web site.  Communication via e-mail is efficient--and we would like to compile a larger address book.  In addition,  president Dave O'Brien hopes you will update your e-mail addresses.  Given retirements/relocations, many of the e-mail addresses are obsolete.  We've increased the number of classmates registered on the website by over 60% in the past year but still want to attract more.
Try using the "distance" notation in the directory to find classmates in your area--or an area you plan to visit.  I just did this for a classmate visiting from Los Altos, CA--he was amazed at the number of classmates within 25 miles of his home.  Unfortunately, this is a "US-only" feature--but it works!  Go to the directory, click on distance at the top, enter a zip code, and then choose a distance.
